Microwave broadband characterization of aging of SU-8 polymer as CPW substrate

    Get PDF
In this paper we present the methodology and the numerical results related to the analysis of aging of the SU- 8 polymer when used as a primary layer for the realization of Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) structures. As test devices, we used a set of transmission lines with different lengths and T-shaped open stubs shunt resonators; by using these geometries, we are able to acquire the data in a broadband range, in principle between 1 GHz and 40 GHz. We conduct the analysis by comparing two different technology run: the first wafer with a deposited layer by a 12-year-old SU-8 and the second wafer, with the same photolithographed metallic geometries, with a brand-new processed SU-8 photoresist

Cognitive Health of Nonagenarians in Southern Italy: A Descriptive Analysis from a Cross-Sectional, Home-Based Pilot Study of Exceptional Longevity (Cilento Initiative on Aging Outcomes Or CIAO).

Background: Nonagenarians and centenarians (NCs) are an extremely fragile population, particularly in regard to their physical and cognitive function. The aim of this study was to define the neurocognitive profiles among 29 NCs and their 49 younger cohabitants aged 50-75 years from The Cilento Initiative on Aging Outcomes (CIAO) Pilot study in the South of Italy that had provided initial hypotheses regarding positive psychological traits related to exceptional longevity. Methods: During the home visits, lifestyle information with specific questionnaires, functional autonomy and the neuropsychological Mini Mental Scale Examination (MMSE), and the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive (ADAS-Cog) scale were obtained by qualified study personnel. The total blood oxidative capacity was also determined by testing the reactive derivative of oxygen metabolites (d-ROM) and by the Biological Antioxidant Potential (BAP). In all individuals, the APOE genotype determination was also performed. Results: All the subjects in both groups showed high adherence to the Mediterranean Diet. None of the NCs had severe cognitive impairment, and a very low incidence of dementia was found. The data obtained on the Activities ed Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (ADL-IADL) scale showed that the majority of NCs (16/29) were autonomous in daily life activities. The comparative assessment of NCs and cohabitants showed no significant differences in the laboratory assessment of oxidative stress and APOE genotype. Conclusion: In the Cilento Region of Southern Italy, NCs seemed to have good cognitive status when compared to younger cohabitants aging 50-65 years without significant differences in oxidative stress markers or APOE genotype. These results might be related to optimal adherence to the Mediterranean diet, although other lifestyle factors and positive personality traits may also contribute to their healthy aging. Further studies on a larger population should be performed to confirm the results of this pilot study

Design optimization of meta-material transmission lines for linear and non-linear microwave signal processing

    Get PDF
The possibility to use CRLH (Composite Right-/Left-Handed) cells to realize both distributed wide-band filters for linear signal processing and non-linear devices like frequency doublers is investigated analytically and numerically. Full-wave electromagnetic simulations are performed for the filtering structure by means of a commercial software package and confirm the validity of the analytic results. Numerical results for CRLH NLTL (Non-Linear Transmission Line) obtained by using the Microwave Office are discussed, providing design considerations about the synthesis of such a component

Reliability of RF MEMS capacitive and ohmic switches for space redundancy configurations

    Get PDF
In this paper RF MEMS switches in coplanar waveguide (CPW) configuration designed for redundancy space applications have been analyzed, to demonstrate their reliability in terms of microwave performances when subjected to DC actuations up to one million cycles. As a result, both the investigated structures fulfill the current electrical requirements expected for redundancy logic purposes

Nerve growth factor is an autocrine survival factor for memory B lymphocytes

    Get PDF
AbstractProduction of nerve growth factor (NGF) was assessed in cultures of human T and B lymphocytes and macrophages. NGF was constitutively produced by B cells only, which also expressed surface p140trk-A and p75NGFR molecules and hence efficiently bound and internalized the cytokine. Neutralization of endogenous NGF caused disappearance of Bcl-2 protein and apoptotic death of resting lymphocytes bearing surface IgG or IgA, a population comprising memory cells, while surface IgM/IgD “virgin” B lymphocytes were not affected. In vivo administration of neutralizing anti-NGF antibodies caused strong reduction in the titer of specific IgG in mice immunized with tetanus toxoid, nitrophenol, or arsonate and reduced numbers of surface IgG or IgA B lymphocytes. Thus, NGF is an autocrine survival factor for memory B lymphocytes

Near-field microwave techniques for micro – and nano - scale characterization in materials science

In this paper, the basic principles of Near-Field Microscopy will be reviewed with focus on the micro- and nano-scale resolution configurations for material science measurements. Results on doping profile, dielectric and magnetic properties will be presented, with details on the calibration protocols needed for quantitative estimation of the dielectric constant and of the permeability

RF MEMS ohmic switches for matrix configurations

    Get PDF
Two different topologies of radio frequency micro-electro-mechanical system (RF MEMS) series ohmic switches (cantilever and clamped–clamped beams) in coplanar waveguide (CPW) configuration have been characterized by means of DC, environmental, and RF measurements. In particular, on-wafer checks have been followed by RF test after vibration, thermal shocks, and temperature cycles. The devices have been manufactured on high resistivity silicon substrates, as building blocks to be implemented in different single-pole 4-throw (SP4 T), double-pole double-throw (DPDT) configurations, and then integrated in Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics (LTCC) technology for the realization of large-order Clos 3D networks
